About the Role
Java and Spring Boot
We are looking for a Senior Banking Software Architect with strong Java expertise to shape secure, reliable banking platforms. You will guide technical decisions, work closely with engineering teams, and translate business requirements into systems that protect financial data and support critical banking operations.
Responsibilities
• Define and evolve the architecture of banking platforms built with Java, Spring Boot, and related technologies.
• Translate business and operational requirements into system designs, integration contracts, and technical standards.
• Design financial workflows with clear transaction boundaries, consistency guarantees, idempotency, auditability, and reconciliation.
• Select appropriate service boundaries, synchronous APIs, messaging, and distributed transaction coordination strategies.
• Guide relational database design, transactional SQL patterns, isolation levels, locking, and performance optimization.
• Establish security architecture covering identity, access controls, encryption, secrets management, and sensitive data protection.
• Lead threat modelling and apply OWASP guidance throughout system design and development.
• Define availability, resilience, disaster recovery, observability, and capacity requirements.
• Review designs and critical code, support complex implementations, and mentor engineering teams.
• Collaborate with product, security, compliance, QA, and operations teams to manage technical risks and plan delivery.
• Document architecture decisions and define practical migration paths for existing systems.
About you
• Extensive commercial Java development experience with proven responsibility for software architecture.
• Strong expertise in Spring Boot, Spring Security, Spring Data, and the wider Java ecosystem.
• Experience designing complex, transaction-intensive systems with demanding security and availability requirements.
• Strong knowledge of relational databases, SQL, ACID transactions, isolation levels, concurrency control, and database performance.
• Understanding of precise monetary representation, currency precision, rounding policies, and financial data integrity.
• Understanding of distributed systems, consistency trade-offs, messaging guarantees, idempotency, and failure recovery.
• Ability to select and apply patterns such as transactional outbox, sagas, and reconciliation where appropriate, including their limitations.
• Knowledge of the OWASP Top 10, API Security Top 10, and ASVS, with practical experience in threat modelling and secure design.
• Experience designing identity and access management using OAuth 2.0, OpenID Connect, and least-privilege access controls.
• Understanding of encryption, key and secrets management, and auditable system behavior.
• Experience with CI/CD, testing strategies, vulnerability management, and production monitoring.
• Ability to assess architectural trade-offs, explain decisions, and guide teams through implementation.
NICE TO HAVE:
• Background in fintech, payments, or financial services.
• Familiarity with banking platforms, core banking systems, and their integration patterns.
• Experience with financial ledgers, payments, settlement, and reconciliation.
• Familiarity with financial messaging standards such as ISO 20022.
• Experience modernizing legacy banking systems through phased migrations.
• Experience with Kafka or RabbitMQ, Docker, Kubernetes, and cloud or on-premises infrastructure.
• Experience supporting security audits and regulatory requirements in banking environments.
